Teaching

  • My philosophy on teaching can be found here.
  • The English Language Teaching Centre at the University of St Andrews exists to provide high quality English language training for overseas students. Complimentary to the language program, credit bearing university modules are offered for students who hope to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Britain or other English speaking countries.

Together with Robert Brignall , we have designed four lecture courses in mathematics. Two of these courses are short term, intense courses, designed to provide a good grounding in mathematics for non-science students. The introductory and intermediate maths courses both run for ten weeks with an exam in March and May for each course, respectively. The further maths course is designed for science students aiming to study a science based degree. This course is also an intense ten week course; however, the material is both greater in volume and more advanced in nature. Specifically, calculus and differential equations are taught in detail at university first year level. A fourth, year long credit bearing course is also taught, similar in nature to the university's MT1002 mathematics course. This course is designed to allow the student to enter university at the second year level at St Andrews, and some other UK institutions.

    Course Outlines

  • Course outline for the Introductory Mathematics module (2006) PDF
  • Course outline for the Intermediate Mathematics module (2006) PDF
  • Course outline for the Further Mathematics module (2006) PDF
  • Still to be added: course outline for Vectors and Differential Equations.

    Lecture Notes

This site is still under construction, however, I have developed the lecture notes (roughly) for publication on the site. So far I have only covered the material for the introductory course, but the aim is to have all the material online for future use by Spring 2008.

    Introductory Mathematics (2006/2007) Material

  • ELT Introductory Mathematics (2006/2007) PDF
  • Introductory Mathematics tutorial sheet 1 PDF
  • Introductory Mathematics tutorial sheet 2 PDF
  • Introductory Mathematics tutorial sheet 3 PDF
  • Introductory Mathematics tutorial sheet 4 PDF
  • Jonathan Bagnall's section of the course is also available for download:
  • Jon's Lecture notes (2006/2007) PDF
  • Jon's tutorial 1 PDF
  • Intermediate Mathematics (2006/2007) Material

  • Intermediate Mathematics tutorial sheet 1 PDF
  • Intermediate Mathematics tutorial sheet 2 PDF
  • Intermediate Mathematics tutorial sheet 3 PDF
  • Intermediate Mathematics tutorial sheet 4 PDF
  • Still to be added: Intermediate Mathematics course notes; Further Mathematics course notes; Vectors course notes; Differential Equations course notes and all other tutorial sheets for these four courses.

I have also been involved with tutoring two undergraduate modules within the maths department of the University of St Andrews. These were the first year courses, MT1001 and MT1002. Over the past three and a half years I have tutored around 150 students in addition to the 100 students I have lectured in ELT.
