Magnetic Carpet
The entire solar surface is threaded with flux tubes of all sizes, from intra-cell fragments with just 1016 Mx, up to sunspot with 1021 Mx. This mass of fragments, when viewed with a magnetograph, shows a carpet of upwards or downwards directed magnetic fields that are the foot points of all the coronal loops. Understanding the distribution and movement of these foot points is essential to determine how much energy is injected into the corona and how this energy can be released. I have used statistical techniques to analysis the observed distribution of magnetic foot points and have also built a model of the magnetic carpet to understand better each of the key processes that occur in it.
